Meet the Artist: Tim Keintz In 2002, while working as an operating room nurse, I enrolled in an evening welding class. Then on weekends I started to make things to amuse myself. People started to offer to pay me for my work. I became Mt Emily Metalworks because at that time I was living on the slopes of Mt Emily in N.E. Oregon. I now reside in rural Idaho and have not worked as a nurse since 2003.
I work primarily with steel. My methods for creating my pieces are simple. I cut, grind and weld and do some shaping and forming with the aid of a torch. I am planning to build a small forge in the coming months in order to more uniformly heat components for shaping. I have as yet found no common theme for my creations. I try to use salvaged steel as much as possible because it is usually cheaper and often the surface has been pitted by weathering which affords a texture that can not be duplicated. Living in a rural area I have come across a number of old cultivating discs which as you can see, I have utilized in various ways. I have made functional sculpture as well as purely decorative sculpture.
